Annie Cummings was elected Department Commander on June 8th, 2024 at the Department of North Carolina Convention, Greensboro, North Carolina.
She served in the United States Marine Corps from April 1978 to December 1979 and June 1986 to May 1994, earning her VFW eligibility by serving in Desert Shield / Desert Storm from November 1990 to May 1991. Originally assigned to the 4th Civil Affairs Group, she was drafted to serve as the Admin Chief for the 2nd MarDiv HQ forward command, assisting with establishing the HQ Command bivouac just outside Kuwait City. In recognition for her service, Annie was awarded the Navy Commendation Medal.
Annie joined the VFW in March 2017, as a life member to Post 9983 in Holly Ridge, North Carolina. Because of her background in Financial Services, she was elected as the Post Quartermaster, Post Commander, then to Jr Vice Cdr for Dist 5 and District 5 Commander. She has received Department Recruiter of the year, National Aid-de-Camp, All State Commander, All American Post (2 xs) and All-American District Commander, achieving top levels to represent her Post and District at the National Convention, back-to-back.
Annie is currently a Gold Legacy Member at Calabash Post 7288. While serving in the Chairs to become Department Commander, Annie was appointed as Class Captain for the Department Commanders Class 125, by then Jr. Vice Commander in Chief, Al Lipphardt.
Annie is also a member of the Loyal Order of the Moose, Women of the Moose where she has served as the Senior Regent and achieved her College of Regents degree. She serves proudly as the Jimmy Legs and Shyster for Pup Tent 2 Mixed Breed in Jacksonville, as well as being a Centennial Member of the VFW National Home.
Annie and her husband Bill (aka Beeall, Dudley, and First Dude) who is a retired USMC First Sergeant, were married twice. First, three days before Annie’s deployment on November 21, 1990, in the Rockville, Maryland courthouse, and again on November 21, 1991 in Luray, Virginia, by Chaplain Pucciarelli, who also baptized Annie in Kuwait on Easter Sunday. Bill and Annie reside in Sunset Beach, North Carolina.
