Annie Cummings

Comrade Anna ("Annie”) Cummings graduated from High School at the age of 16, attended Community College for a time, before she enlisted in the United States Marine Corps in 1978. She received a meritorious mast, two meritorious promotions and graduated Comm school first in class, before checking in at MCB Camp Pendleton, where she was assigned as the Admin Chief to the CEO, HQ Co, HQ Bn. Comrade Cummings (formerly Tyner) was solely responsible for typing the first Comm SOP on a MagCard, and meritoriously promoted to E-4. 

Annie married and was expecting her first child and was honorably discharged in December 1980. In 1987 Comrade Cummings relocated to the Washington DC Area, worked as a Paralegal, and re-enlisted in the Marine Corps Reserves, assigned to the 4thCivil Affairs Group, located at Anacostia Naval Air Facility, Washington, DC.  Just after reenlisting again, she was activated for Desert Shield / Desert Storm, and scheduled to deploy immediately.  Having just gotten engaged, she and Bill Cummings made a quick trip to the Rockville County Courthouse where they were married, followed by a trip to the airport to ship her two children to their grandparents, in Oregon, met her husband's family over Thanksgiving (the following day), and reported to the Drill Center for deployment Saturday, bound for Camp Lejeune, 2nd Mar Div, to prep for deployment.  Annie was promoted to Sergeant prior to departure for Saudi Arabia.

On New Year’s Eve, 1990, Annie was enroute to Saudi Arabia with Desert Shield / Desert Storm.  While her unit deployed in teams, to the field, she was assigned to the S-1, 2ndMarDiv HQBn as Admin Chief, and deployed to a mid-echelon re-supply bivouac.  Soon after a thwarted threat of attack by an armored column, Comrade Cummings was reassigned to the forward command, and was one of only 5 women who accompanied the ground assault into Kuwait.

Comrade Cummings was afforded the privilege of returning home with the advance party, soon after the cease fire, and received a Navy Commendation Medal, along with an honorable discharge in April 1992, for injuries sustained in Kuwait.

Comrade Cummings enjoyed a noteworthy career in the Automotive Industry for the next 25 years, holding various leadership positions and achieving multiple awards for her successes.  She retired inm 2019 in Holy Ridge, NC with her husband Bill, a retired Marine 1st Sgt, and retired Sgt of the DC Metropolitan Police and Pentagon Force Protection Agency.

Comrade Cummings joined the VFW in March of 2017, at Topsail Island Post 9983 and was elected as Quartermaster.  She held that position for two years, making state recruiter and All State, and was then elected as Post Commander, earning All American and All state for the next two years.  During this time, she was also elected as District Jr. Vice Commander and District Commander, again earning All American and All State recognition for District 5, over the following two years of her command, and was subsequently elected as Department Jr Vice Commander.  Annie was also selected to be the Jr. Vice Class Captain, by Jr Vice CIC, has selected as the National Special Aid-de-Camp, and most recently joined the Military Order of the Cooties.
